According to the legend Lir was a powerful king of the magical Tuatha De Dannann, one of the earliest tribes to inhabit Ireland. When his beloved Queen passed away, Lir married her sister Aoife so that his children would have a loving mother. However, Aoife was so intensely jealous of Lir's love for his four children that she turned the four children into white swans with her powerful sorcery, the like of which had not been in Ireland before or since.
