There is a story about the poverty stricken people of Cork getting their own public clock, located at St. Annes Shandon Church. Local medics were worried that the people would poison themselves or overdose because they couldn't tell the time. After a meeting of Cork Corporation in 1843 it was agreed that the construction of the people's clock should be given the go-ahead, under the close guidance of a skilled architect called James Mangan. While not quite as large as the steeple clock at St. Annes, the Belleek Shandon Clock still serves it's purpose well. It is shaped just like the clock at St. Annes Church, you can see the pointed roof and narrow windows that hide the bell in the real-world bell tower. A bunch of small shamrocks add a touch of colour to the front of the clock, matching the gilt edging of the timepiece perfectly.
